DUST & ILLUSIONS Screening. 30 YEARS of BURNING MAN

November 12th 2009. 8pm
MIT campus: Rooms 26-100, Boston, MA http://lsc.mit.edu/26-100

TRAILERS, info @ http://dustandillusions.com
TICKETS: http://dustandillusions.com/blog/boston-mit-lecture-series-screening-nov-12th-2009
FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=153383414261

After sold out screenings on the West Coast the film is finally coming the East! Director Olivier Bonin will be present after the screening for a discussion with the audience about the relevance of Burning Man today, and the meaning of evolution.

SAN FRANCISCO FILM FEST says "Dust & Illusions, Olivier Bonin’s fascinating documentary takes a privileged glimpse at the history and future of Burning Man, one of the most important (if not the most important) counter-cultural movements of the last 3 decades. Bonin provides a thoughtful and critical overview of the event’s transformation from a humble guerilla art project on San Francisco’s Baker Beach to a major corporation that funds artists, fosters a year-round virtual community, and builds Black Rock City in the middle of nowhere on a yearly basis. If you’ve never been to the playa, DUST & ILLUSIONS will give you an excellent idea of exactly what you’re missing, and veteran burners will see the direction the event is headed (for better or for worse). Don’t miss it."

Fall Aerial Fabric classes at Flying Squirrel Consortium

Fall 2009 Aerial Fabric classes are now forming

Aerial Fabric, also known as Aerial Silk, or Tissu, is an
acrobatic circus art form which takes place on two long ribbons of
fabric rigged from a single point. Acts typically involve graceful
climbs, dramatic poses made from the combination of body and fabric,
and heart-stopping dives and drops. In recent years it has become quite
popular amongst the new circus troupes touring the globe. You
too can learn this art form!

Classes are available for people with no fabric experience,
and also for folk with some basic experience who want to improve their
technique and add to their fabric vocabulary.

http://flyingsquirrelconsortium.com/classes.html for more information

See you in the air!

***Zombie Movie Needs Fire Performers***

Hey everyone, this is Eli, your friend from Maine!
So a while back I am getting a tattoo, and while there getting worked on I mention to my friendly neighborhood tattoo artist about how I was doing some fire breathing the night before. Afterwards, the guy sitting across from me who had been also getting some work done mentioned how he overheard and was interested in getting some people together for some fire performing in an upcoming Zombie movie that he is producing.
Well needless to say, the opportunity to breathe fire at some Zombies onscreen was just too good, so we exchanged numbers and I didnt hear form him again for about a month until right before Wildfire.
Then he told me that he was doing a promotional gig at a big bar and that he would like to get as many fire performers together as possible to perform in this big roped off parking lot at the bar. We talked for awhile about both that and the movie and this is the info I have so far:
The promotional night is July 17th. He said he would provide transportation form Portland to Auburn, where the club is. He would also pay for all of our food and drinks. He said the actual pay would be minimal to none but he can cover those expenses.
As for shooting the film itself, it will be in October sometime. Not as many details on that, but he basically said the same: that he would cover transportation to and from Portland to the shooting area, all food, and lodging/camping. Of course we would also get to be in a Zombie movie breathing and beating down Zombies with fire, which is what the guy said he'd like to see...maybe with Zombie mannequins we can ignite etc.
Sounds like fun to me...

You can get in on this by posting here, or sending me an email at risingatlantis@gmail.com

At any rate, he is a copy of the email that I requested he send:

Hello everyone -

My names Eric with Bad Monkey Studioz and I just want to let people know about some projects that I'm involved with and see if anyone is interested in being part of them.

First off, I'm the executive producer for an independant zombie film that begins shooting in the fall. We are currently breaking down all the scenes to put together a shooting schedule. Our plan is to shoot on weekends and some evenings, since we all still have day jobs. We plan on having the film shot within two months on this schedule. When the shooting schedule is complete, I will forwad to all who are intersted. I will also be letting people know when we plan on holding our casting calls, for those interested in acting in the film.

As for our next promotional gig, we have the Carnival of Chaos at Club Texas in Auburn, Maine Friday, July 17th, which we're also looking for people to participate in. We have a huge section of the parking lot we can rope off for our fire entertainers to do their thing. We have local radio and television stations helping in promoting this, so we expect it to be a pretty big event that we're going to do every year, this being the first.

We're trying to keep this local with local musicians and entertainers that are willing to be part of these projects, because they enjoy what they do and want to support local art and entertainment, so if your agenda is making a quick buck, this probably isn't the gig for you. I will tell you that I will pay for your supplies, feed you and keep your thirst at bay. As for the movie and any over night shoots, we'll all be camping out on the lots we're we are shooting.

Feel free to contact me or Eli with any questions and look forward to working with you,

Eric
I'm working on a little construction project and have need of a table saw. I need it sometime between June 23 and July 3. Anyone in the Boston area willing to let me cut some wood for an hour or so will forever be my hero.

Thanks!

Get a psi-hoop for your summer festival enjoyment!

Festival Fun!!!

I am looking to do a little business this summer making bright, rechargeable, LED hula hoops! These psi-hoops look spectacular in dark rooms or outdoors at night. If you have never seen one in action, go to youtube.com and type in "led hoop". My hoops are solid, custom wired with care by yours truly, have built-in rechargeable batteries (NiMH) and come with an AC/DC (120V wall-outlet plug-in) charger. Charger jack and on/off switch are built in to the outside of the hoop so as to not be in the way of your hooping. Please note: these are permanently attached, not collapsible. I can make them to your preferred size (within reasonable limits), and with your preferred colors. If you need a car charger, that will be extra. Other custom extras, such as color-changing lights or UV lights are possible, and would also be more money. Please let me know what you want and we can talk about it.

Starting price:
Standard size hoop (35-40", more or less) with around 20 lights -- $150 includes 6-month repair warranty if lights stop working during normal use (i.e. hooping, not throwing into water or off of tall buildings). $10 extra if you want blue lights (they are more expensive). You pay shipping for initial delivery and/or repair delivery. I will only charge you for the actual cost of shipping, so that will depend on the size and weight of the finished hoop. Local pick-up is also available in the Groton, MA area. I need about two weeks time to make your hoop, because I need to order the LEDs. Most likely it will be ready in less than two weeks.

About me: I am a fourth-year electrical engineering student, and 37-year-old mom. My partner has been under and un-employed for over a year, struggling to get enough work to keep us going until I finish school. I am trying this as a creative business to help us make ends meet (and maybe eventually get on top of it all!). If you have any questions about me or my hoops, please ask!

Logo Design contest: $150 and lots of exposer...get in on it !

Can You Create A Bad-Ass logo for Defy the Box .com ?

The winner gets $150 plus tons of free exposure.

Hey there you fine bunch of freaky creative individuals!

My name is Leah Shapiro and I am the founder of DefytheBox.com. Over the past year my website and vision have grown to the point where it is ready to have a kick-ass logo to represent it. My plan is to create a Defy the Box movement and build an empire from it.

I want a cool, powerful, sassy, unique image to represent my vision. What I hope is that you – or one of your equally out-there friends – will design it for me.

What I’m looking for is a fun, freaky, hot, edgy, hip perspective. (Think alternative-minded, Burning Man, firespinning, hooping, Anime, sexy, Steam Punk, tattooed, ex-raver types with a splash of yoga and spirituality thrown in.)

So what I want to know is just 2 things:

Do YOU hold that perspective?

Can you create a logo for Defy the Box that embodies the energy of someone who has thrown traditional ideas out the window and refused to be crammed into a box by society ?

If you are interested in getting in on this contest, go here to learn more and sign up:

WickerMan 2009 Updates!

WickerMan 2009

The second annual WickerMan is almost upon us! WickerMan is the mid-Atlantic's burn with an Earth Spirited twist. Personal exploration, inspiration without sanction, possibility without constraint. It is on the Land that we become a community of participants, taking action through Art, Fire and Self Expression. WickerMan is an Altar to the Possible on the Land that Sustains us all.

Within this ethos are the gifts of our participants- Theme Camps, Art, Performance and Volunteering. We have a wild and diverse host of registered Theme Camps and Art this year. Experience everything from Flaming Tetherball (yes, that is verbatim) to Spanish flaming liquor rituals and everything in between. You could find yourself leading an impromptu yoga class or rocking your body in Sound Town, an all night aural cornucopia of DJs from across the East Coast, matched by our largest Art Grant ever for deco lighting and decorations.

We started with $6,000 in the Art Grant budget for Artists to fund a variety of initiatives, from Altars to Performance to Installations. And we still have a bit left to give out for late proposals, so do ask! Our Artists are guaranteeing us a visual feast of beautiful little installations, big in-your-face performances and tokens like free noodles or a new 'do.

If Volunteering is your cup of tea, there are many fields where your hands are needed. Consider Ranging to keep WckerMan the litter free event it was last year, or Greeting your fellow burners as they arrive. If swinging a hammer is your thing, then there is a place for you to help build the Man. Set-up Weekend is May 15-17, and that's a head-on collision with what lies behind the curtain. We've ordered the lumber and are preparing our designs for building the WickerMan. Come join the crew to create the biggest effigy east of the Mississippi! Just the normal $10 a night grounds fees apply, day trips are free.

May 21st-25th is the Burn, he flames on Saturday night, early-in and late-out is fine by us. Joe Average registration closes May 9th at $55, Better late than never closes May 19th at $65. And then there is THE GATE.

Visit www.wickermanburn.org for more information and online registrations. Or call the office at 814.784.3080.

need local burners for a fascinating event on 5/13!

hear ye, hear ye, local burners: I have a proposition for you.

I recently instigated Pecha Kucha in Providence. [if you have zero clue what Pecha Kucha is, it's a monthly format for sharing ideas, in which presenters are allotted 20 PowerPoint slides and 20 seconds per slide. Put simply: 6 minutes and 40 seconds of PowerPoint performance art. Presenters from all domains of creative activity are welcome - activists, animators, arbiters, architects, artists, chefs, coolhunters, critics, curators, designers, dreamers, entrepreneurs, fabricators, fashionistas, historians, makers, rabblerousers, scientists... - but the experience should be primarily visual. Pecha Kucha began in Tokyo in 2003, has since spread to 166 cities worldwide, and now it landed in Providence.]

so I'd Love to do a presentation about burning man, but instead of one person with 20 slides, I wanna do 20 people with one slide each. in other words, it would be a 20-person presentation, in which each of us gets 1 slide (20 seconds) with which to illustrate what burning man is, means, share a memory, describe an experience... the next Pecha Kucha is on Wednesday, May 13th at Bravo in Providence (http://www.pecha-kucha.org/cities/providence/3). I already have 13 burners, so I just need 7 more.

***are you down to be one of those lucky 7?***

please email yours truly (Stephanie) for further details: misstephanie.gerson@gmail.com.

5th Annual BOSTON BUNNY BARHOP

Hey you! You are cordially invited to participate in the totally epic 5th Annual Boston Bunny Barhop! That's right, come spread springtime cheer whilst making a total ass of yourself!

WHAT: A good ol'-fashioned barhop in bunny ears. We will move together as a boisterous band of boozed-up bunnies, hopping from bar to bar to bar to bar to bar, grabbing a real-quick drink at each spot, giving out high fives, and just generally sticking it to the Man.

WHEN: Easter weekend, of course. Friday, April 10th. First drink of the night around 9 p.m!

WHERE: Cambridge, MA. Starting-line bar = Miracle of Science Bar & Grill, 321 Mass Ave.

WEB: Please visit www.bunnybarhop.moonfruit.com if you need further convincing!

------- THE SORDID DETAILS -------

GLOWINESS!: We like to establish as glorious a street presence as possible, so we encourage maximum GLOW-iness! Please deck your bad self out with glowsticks, LEDs, EL-wire, lasers, flamethrowers, or, like, whatever!

HOTLINE!: The Bunny Barhop Hotline will be open all night. Participants may call the number: (508) 265-9141 and get minute-to-minute updates on the current location of the 'Hop. Come join the rabble at any time (though we'd love to have you there for the whole ugly drunken affair, start to glorious finish).

ROUTE!: There's a planned route for the 'Hop, hitting hotspots (and freaking out squares!) down Mass Ave toward Harvard Square. Traditionally we get as far as The People's Republik (876 Mass Ave), so proactive designated drivers may wish to park around this area at the beginning of the night.

LOVE!: We welcome rabbits of all cliques, circles, & crews. Throw on your ears, come on down, and make a mass of instant new drunken friends!

RULES!: There is only one hard n' fast rule (say it with us, people): RABBIT EARS MANDATORY. Seriously seriously seriously. Fashion them out of construction paper. Grab them from the Easter aisle of your friendly neighborhood drugstore. Maim a stuffed animal. Just wear the frickin' ears.

Questions & suggestions may be directed to your friendly rabbit coordinators:

WickerMan Burn 09!

Open Event Registration for WickerMan 2009
Set-up May 15-17, The Burn May 21-25

WickerMan is an event that brings together Burn Culture, the Art of Giving, Ecological Responsibility, culminating in an event that depends of the Radical Self-Expression of each individual. Based on the tenets of Burning Man of the Black Rock Desert, we actively incorporate their founding principles- Communal Participation, Decommodification, Radical Inclusion and Radical Self-Reliance. In essence, at WickerMan, Radical Self-Expression Meets Radical Earth Spirit.

We convene to celebrate what we as individuals offer to the community, through Art, Gifting and Self-Reliant Participation. Together we commune within the land to build and burn the biggest Man east of the Mississippi River. Individual participation is what makes this event happen, we depend on each other for content and execution. Every contribution, from Volunteering to Art Creation is essential to facilitate this WickerMan. What can you bring to the table?

Art, in its many mysterious ways, is at the core of this event. WickerMan offers over $6000 to fund a variety of Art initiatives, everything from Theme Camps to beautiful Installations, Altars and Performance. Through Action and Creation we transcend the expected and stretch the paradigm of the possible.

WickerMan will again take place at Four Quarters of Artemas, PA, a beautiful ecologically diverse campground. Four Quarters has natural swimming holes in Sideling Creek, rolling meadows and pine forest. Four Quarters also has a great Ride-Share database to help you carpool to the event. Bring yourself and your inspiration to be a part of a community separate from the 'default world'. Check out www.wickermanburn.org for more information and event registration.

Aerial Fabric, also known as Aerial Silk, or Tissu, is an acrobatic circus art form which takes place on two long ribbons of fabric rigged from a single point. Classes are available for people with no fabric experience, and also for folk with some basic experience who want to improve their technique and add to their fabric vocabulary.
Classes are 1 night per week, and run from April 7/9 through May 26/28 (tuesdays
/thursdays)

Wanted: Children's Wooden Building Blocks

i am trying to find/collect as many children's wooden building blocks as i can get my little hands on!
i'll be needing them to build my art contribution to Playa Del Fuego this spring....
the theme of the project adresses childhood abuse so...yeah its a bit of a downer... but it means alot to me and i hope a space can be made for it at the event
i can use any and all shapes and sizes.. as long as they are made of wood... the idea is to burn it on sunday...
my math has me at roughly a thousand blocks.. but i may not need that many...
even wooden toys would work great to as well.. ie cars, trains whatever!
i live in NH so some of you are very far away... even if you brought them to PDF that would help in a huge way.. i will need MANY extras at the event.. and i mean MANY!
if you had only a select few but wanted to add them to the project for sentimental reasons you can ship them to me, obviously... you can PM me for my address...i will be sure to give them a special place...
if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask here or in a PM.
so start looking in all those old boxes and crates in the basement or attic! even just a few from each of you could make a huge differance!
thank you tons and tons...

Hooping

Brand new and novice hooper - I'm hoping that there are people willing/able to teach or resource share in the area? Seems my research directs me to San Fran which is a bit far from the Upper Valley VT/NH, and all the instructional videos I can find want me to hoop as a "fun and sexy exercise" as opposed to the "bad ass fire hooper" of my dreams.
$600 Creative & Cozy CO-OP has 2 rooms opening! (Roslindale, JP)

Want to live in community?
We have a 3 story house with 2 rooms becoming available. One immediately, one in March.

Currently there is an art professor who's great with gagets! An activist who works with the younger generation as well as has her own consulting business (oh and they're married!), a spiritual, marketing jack of all trades and one kitty who's the prince of our palace. All in all we're a guy, two gals, and Mr. Noche'.

You'll find a spacous living room that subs as a dance area, yoga/meditation space or movie theater if you pull down the screen and plug in the projector, a cozy dinning room where many of our house plants reside off the huge kitchen where you can enjoy meals made by us or treat us to something you make yourself. A mud room that leads to the 'english garden' backyard with garage and driveway that heads out to the street that has ample parking!
We've also got an 'artific', this is a art room/ office on the second floor where you might find any number of craftiness taking place, a music room fully equiped with recording devices and much more, one full bath and one with a stylish shower. Oh and a full sized basement for storage and more rugged projects like wood working or fermination! Washer and dryer, dishwasher, a tv but we don't really watch it... We've got beautiful hard wood floors and some carpeting also. High speed internet througout the house as well. We join CSA's and use a chore wheel, we meet when we need talk about something. We believe in good communication as well as personal space.

The rooms available really depend on what you like best. We're willing to switch things up and put the music room up for grabs if you want to pay for your own private bathroom, or if you love closet space the 3rd floor, full of secret spots room is ideal. We've got a 'yellow' room with great light that's currently empty and other options as well. Rent is dependant on your preference of rooms, $600 to $800.

We're all in our mid 30's, eco-friendly and community minded. Noche' the prince is a doggish cat, playing fetch and going outside and he's content to be the only animal in this domain, cute and funny and very well mannered! He hangs on the front porch most sunny days!

You can walk to the arboretum and commuter rail. Parking is plentiful. We're fun to live with and looking for new roomies as soon as next week and then again in March.

Our neighbors are great as is our landlord. We share meals when we can and split up the utilities, if you've lived in community before you're fit right in, if you haven't maybe you'd like to learn what it's about. We don't smoke but if you happen to indulge Noche' would welcome you on the porch. We have ominvorous and veggie lovers, and almost vegans here too so whatever your likes are we're open to it.

write to us and tell as much about yourself as you care to share!

Namaste,
6 malverna.

I recently was contacted by someone seeking a fire eater in the Delaware area. I'm still getting information about the job, but so far I know that they insist on fire eating, and that it's a private event in the Lewes/Rehobeth area. If you could just post and state interest, I'll get further details up when I get them. Thanks.
November 8th
Doors open at 8pm and close at midnight

Be the Creator for a night of special speciation and natural selection with a dash of recombination. Reduce the complexity to a singularity. Delight and inform the intellect. Form a pattern in time. Change your energy into matter. Hone your style.

How?

1. Sign-up
B. Volunteer
iii. Donate
IV. Create/Participate

1. Capacity is limited - sign up now. If you plan to participate you must be on the list - this includes performers and volunteers. Once the list is full, we apologize but no further guests can be added. Details & directions will be sent to those on the list.

B. Intelligent design is created deliberately by all of us. Drinks and food will not be provided. A wish list of food and drinks is on the sign-up page. Volunteers are needed to work the door, to maintain the food and drink tables, and for clean-up - more information is on the sign-up page.

Want to volunteer, but don't know where? Need more help on your project?
For general volunteer wrangling needs contact Sarah at Sarah_PurplePrincess@yahoo.com

Bring a cup. Leave no trace.

iii. Ten dollars is the going rate for a smart time. More is appreciated. Proceeds will be donated.

IV. There are all kinds of ways to create a new paradigm:

ART:
Have art you'd like to install / show off / project / perform? Got ideas for decoration or want to help set up and decorate the space? Contact Liz (zilya.v@gmail.com) & Terry (teresadovidio@hotmail.com) Have an idea but not sure how to complete it? Write to the list (burners@bostonburners.org) and invite others to collaborate.

FINERY:
You got it out there, you rocked it, you brought it home! Shake the dust out, and rock it again! Did you bring out more costumes than you could have worn in a week? Give your playa-wear their time in the blinky limelight!

EARLY CREW:
There will be a few days set aside in the week before Decom for on-site preparations, including cleaning, decorating, lighting, prep and art set-up!

GUEST LIST:
So you want to join us? Well, get on the list before it fills up! Unfortunately, space is limited...

To get on the guest list, goto:

Please! You must RSVP to attend - expect to be turned away at the door if are not on the list.
No further guests can be added once we are full or at the door.

Details & directions will be sent to those on the guest list.

Hi Familia! Colorado Burner here, Milana!
I will be heading up to the big city (NYC) Oct 10-21 and will be in Boston for a wedding the weekend of the 18th. I would love to meet up with some Boston Burners. I am looking for some fun action and entertainment. I do have family there but would rather crash on a couch of more interesting people, so if you have one and would love the company then I am all yours!
Also, If there are any parties going on, then please do inform me!
Give me a jingle @ 970-306-2204. I rarely check email...too busy with living but I am sure I will check it before heading that way.
Live, Love and Burn!

Cirque Du Soleil -KOOZA - BOSTON - Looking for help! Attention anyone that's looking for a Temporary Job with the Circus

Cirque Du Soleil -KOOZA - BOSTON - Looking for help!

Hello Fire Friends,

As some of you may already know, Cirque du Solei is coming to Boston August 28 - October 20th (more or less), and as many of you know I tour with the Circus as a photographer.

If you are looking for a part-time / Full Time job for a few weeks at the circus (the full time it will be in Boston MA), we are looking to hire a few photographers and customer service people. Please note however this job is not with Cirque but rather 'Show Time Pictures' who are the official photographers for the Cirque. You will be working for Show Time Pictures at Kooza.

-----------------
Photo job,

You will be a photographer out front of the big top. Sort of like going to an amusement and getting asked to have your picture taken, but you will be the one asking to take the picture.

we supply the cameras, some training, and a great experience.

Qualifications:
1.

On the last note:
I am still looking for a place to live at in Boston. We found a nice 2 bed room location but, I would rather stay with a fire spinner (poi) person. If you have an apartment / 1 room - fully furnished - with Internet and living materials you would like to rent / share with another fire person... let me know.

The circus will be at:

Bayside Expo Center

Vernon street
Columbia Point
Boston, MA, 02125

I would need a place next to that location or close to the red line.

Cheers and email me at :
tim@digitalmack.com
with any questions or comments.

Have your own freak bus, with a storied history. Someone I know graduated from college this spring, bought Incus' big blue bus, and did a cross country trip with some friends to Seattle and back doing circus performances, running on waste veggie oil from restaurants. Now he has to move on to other stuff, so the bus is for sale...

Help Needed!!! Ship Your Stuff and Help Save the BurningTruck!!

Burning Truck Container-2 is in danger of being derailed! Your help is requested.

All you need to do is make your trip to BM easier on yourself by buying a share on the Truck. Your stuff will get shipped from Boston to the playa and back!!! ...easy

10-Shares need to be sold and Time is of the essence. Please sign up soon at:
burningtruck.chaoshacker.org/

Message from wagner of burningtruck:
//----
Ok, so, here we are. Container 1 is sold out. Container 2 is about 10
shares short of being sold out. In order for container 2 to happen we
need to raise ~$3900 by July 30th. I have not worked the final numbers
and precessed all the paypal and checks I have received, so it may be a
bit more or a bit less. The simple solution would be for everyone to pay
about $75 more per share. The better solution would be to sell the
remaining 10 shares. There is really no time for fund raising, etc. since
I need to pay for the containers on August 1. Thoughts and ideas are
appreciated. I do not want to cancel the second container because that
screws many of you. So....we need more cash.
Playa Hyrdation Project. Yes!

My camp is gifting wonderful, natural, healthy, cold beverages to the denizens of BRC again this year, and it looks like we will be an even bigger presence this year than last. We will be setting up shop right at The Temple to hydrate all comers through their contemplation and jubilation. We may also be popping up in other parts of the city using our bike-drawn kegs.

The Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company of Ashland OR is donating their time and beveraging equipment to make this all possible. What the rest of us parched desert dwellers need to do is donate the INGREDIENTS. Check out their website www.heartsongchai.com for the link to make a donation that will be used to purchase organic fruit, honey, chilies and other basics for you and your friends (and all the other thirsty people you have never even met) to refresh yourselves. Don't wait until you are already on the playa to wish you had chipped in for THE BEST LEMONADE YOU WILL EVER TASTE.

A $10 donation will buy enough ingredients to hydrate almost 20 burners!
www.heartsongchai.com

See you in a month!

Michael
Pass this post on to your friends!

BIOBUS (space) SHUTTLE 2008

BIOBUS (space) SHUTTLE 2008. That’s right…WE’RE BACK FOR YEAR 2!!!

Meet new lifelong friends on the BIOBUS (space) SHUTTLE to Black Rock City. You will be scooped up at Reno International and whisked to Whole Foods for a quick grocery run and then on to the playa!!! This is our second year in a pilot program to lessen our cumulative impact of travel to the greatest city on Mama Earth.

A $60-$75 donation to Burn Clean Project will reserve a One Way ride to or from the playa, helping you to avoid burning petroleum, the cost of a car rental, and the worst part of all—scrubbing the rental car thoroughly enough so they don’t charge you a playa-sized cleaning fee!

Lets get on the bus! For more information, go to the Burn Clean Project's website at:
www.burncleanproject.org/

Thank you and tons of loves!
style drifts from glitchy downtempo to ragga bounce to hip-hop mashed up with shroomed-out crunk, and twisted basslines, of course, abound... am hoping to get feedback on this stuff, so let me know how you likee!

Vegan Bus to Burning Man

The Vegan Bus ( www.theveganbus.com ) is going to Burning Man again this year, and will have some extra space, probably enough for 4 extra people than we have now. We leave from Northampton, MA. Accommodations will include the ride plus vegan food and the option of camping with us. With fuel prices going up and airline tickets going up too, our vegetable oil powered bus is the way to go!

You can see last year's route (which will be similar this year) here:
http://theveganbus.com/2007/06/28/burning-man-dates-and-route/

We can stop along the way to pick people up as well...

If anyone is interested in finding our more please contact me directly.

This will be my virgin trip to the playa - I'm a regular at psyforia and an experienced festival goer.

I'm guessing there are at least a few psyforia goers who may be veteran burners.

If your going this friday, drop me a note. It would be great to meet some of the transient (or rather transcendent) community.

MISCHIEF IN THE MACHINE - A Circus Folktale = in boston, may 30th....

Emperor Norton's Stationary Marching Band presents:

MISCHIEF IN THE MACHINE - A Circus Folktale

Through our signature blend of live music, theater & circus arts,
dilapidated world where everyday life has been crushed under an
oppressive regime of silence. The story follows a haphazard hero who
uses playfulness and absurdity to rally a misfit resistance.

Mischief in the Machine is an adult theatrical-style circus
performance, which includes acrobatics, aerial performance, dance, and
an all-original musical score composed and performed by Emperor
Norton's Stationary Marching Band.
Firefly 2008 Call for Art and Theme Camps (the humans are at it again)

this is the tale of an enchanted land that was never quite the same place twice*

the land of ampersandy, was built by a firefly,
who was very fond of rain and people - so that when she went burning,
she could take the people with her thru her dazzling razzamaTAZ!

doot doot doot doot - da doot da doot da do-oo

if i may spout about the land of ampersandy....

don't worry, it won't hurt
now you are under the spell of the green man's ginger...

this firefly has quite the acumen,
holding unconditional love for every type of human
although she tends to be practically illusive
to those not prepared to be radically inclusive

the first of ten insightful thoughts she holds dear
when dazzling the razzamaTAZ we do our best to adhere
we come best prepared and rely on ourselves
to charm the pixies, the sprites, & the elves
so that they may befriend us and instead pranks
they may bless us with the everlasting joy of spanks
we know stress to impress is illusion of oppression
and get down and dirty with the radical self-expression
we water our plants with just as much care
as we would each others', as we collectively share
immediately with the moment & every happenstance
we deconstruct our barriers as we prepare to dance

the firefly sends you this transmission - in order to burn she request your ignition

by drawing & dancing, sculpting & spinning,
painting, projecting, writing & singing,
silk flying & screaming, building & breathing
jamming & spanking, glitching & beating,
stringing & stretching, hooping & humming
mixing & mash uping, teaching & strumming,

spread the good word! for art she calls! - be fine or unfinished the bug welcomes all!

a tip from the luna moths; they say there's a buzz
on getting prepared over what the moon does
this year the land will be shown the new moon
of this they warn we may wish to attune

while new beginnings are born on this night
it remains the darkest; we aim to be bright!
let our art shine & blink & radiantly glow
enlightening our nights as we reap what we sow*

______________________________________________

Please forward to someone whose art makes you happy:
_________________________________________________
Firefly is a community of some of the most creative people in New England and beyond. Each year we come together to be inspired by the woods and by each other. Making and sharing art is central to our collective vision.

If you are an experienced artist, we would love for you and your work to join us. If you are just beginning to explore your creativity, Firefly is an ideal environment in which to experiment. Here the strange is welcomed, and art does not need to make money to be valuable or impress anyone to find a home
and an open-minded audience.

Creating art for Firefly is one of the best ways to participate!

INSTALLATION
Firefly creates a unique relationship between the
natural and the artificial. Some of our favorite
memories are of works of art placed in special natural
environments where they suddenly seem to belong. In
past years Firefly explorers have come across a rose
garden in the woods, a glowing galaxy in the meadow,
disco balls hung from trees, and a winged frog sitting
above a brook. We would love to see more sculpture and
installation art, and we have plenty of space for it.

PERFORMANCE
DJ's, bands, and performers of all types are essential
to Firefly. The festival is full of opportunities for
jamming and imporvised performance. Scheduled
performances with amplified sound are also possible
when a performer collaborates with a camp that is able
to provide a sound system. If you are a performer, you
can turn your camp into your ideal venue, or use the
discussion lists to find another camp to host you.
*** If you need help finding a place to
play, contact our music coordinator at:
performance@fireflyartscollective.org ***

FIRE
Fireflies love fire performance and all types of fire
art. These things happen in designated areas with
respect for safety, of course.
For more information write to:
fire@fireflyartscollective.org.

DANCE
For many insects, dancing is an important form of
communication. For many humans, it is a reason to
exist. Come dance with us.

VIDEO
VJ art and video screenings are also an important part
of Firefly. In the past theme camps have provided
projectors and screens. If you have something to show,
use the discussion lists to find a camp that would
like to screen it.

GLOWING ***note note- it's a new moon!***
Of course Fireflies' favorite activity of all is
glowing. At night our village lights up with lasers,
LED's, EL wire, glow sticks, and blacklight painting.
Glowing art is always welcome.

COSTUME
This is your opportunity to dress how you feel, or
become a character from your own mythology.

CAMPING
You need a home at Firefly, and your home can be your art, or a home for your friends' art. For more info see:
http://www.fireflyartscollective.org/tiki-index.php?page=Themecamps

WHATEVER
If you make art that does not fit into any of the
categories on this page, we'd especially like to
experience it.

SPACE
Your creativity can turn a clearing in the woods into
a perfect place for meditation, ritual, dancing,
performance, chilling, teaching, or partying. Wide,
flat, open spaces are rare at Firefly. However, if you
design your project to fit among the trees, you will
have many beautiful sites from which to choose. There
is no official system for assigning or reserving
sites. As long as you show respect for your neighbors,
your project can go wherever you choose.

POWER
Electricity is available in limited areas. If your
project requires it, write to dpw@fireflyartscollective.org,
or use the discussion lists to find a camp with a generator.

PLANNING
Firefly is a Leave No Trace event. This means your
project should be planned to have minimal impact on
the land, and you will be expected to remove it
entirely at the end of the event. Often nature puts
Firefly to the test with rain, mud, and cold. Don't
let this scare you, but be prepared for an adventure.
Shuttles are generally available to move supplies from
the parking area to the event and back, but shuttle
service can be interrupted by unforeseen
circumstances. If your site does not happen to be near
the main road, you may need to move your gear quite a
ways on foot. If you're new to Firefly and you're
planning something big, use the discussion lists to
network with experienced Firefly artists and learn
what to expect.

GRANTS
Firefly is proud to offer small grants for some art
projects. For more information, see the Grants page.

HEAD-STARTS
If you would like to start setting up your project
before the event, you are welcome to join us for the
Work Weekends. We ask that you and your crew also
devote some time to infrastructure projects that are
necessary to the entire event. When planning, remember
that gear you bring in over several days may be
difficult to remove in one day at the end of the
festival.

CONTACT
You don't need permission to bring your art to
Firefly, but if you're planning something, we'd love
to hear from you. Send a brief description of your
project to art@fireflyartscollective.org and we can
add it to the web site. Also feel free to write to
that address with any questions for Firefly planners.

POSSIBILITY
Anything is possible at Firefly with collaboration
between participants. If you have an idea but need
volunteers, advice, or resources to make it happen,
posting to the Discussion Lists and Tribe is the best
way to find them.

Cross Post from another list.
As some of you know Carlane got a new job working for a tree farm. They have about 400 55 gallon metal drums that are free for the taking. They make great burn barrels and every burner needs a burn barrel or two or four hundred. :) The barrels are in New York just over the boarder from Bennington VT. If anyone is interested contact here directly at carlanemattson@yahoo.com.

Make your own cut and mix sweater this Saturday!

Want to make a sweater but don’t feel comfortable making one from scratch? Like to mix things up? Clean out your closet or go to Goodwill and buy the most fabulous knits you can find. In this one-time Saturday afternoon workshop you’ll make a copy of your favorite sweater or invent something new or fabulous by cutting up and recombining the ones you brought to class. This class is for guys and dolls!

Instructor: Sarah Phillips is a community activist and textile artist, who spends her days teaching young adults how to change their communities. She learned how to sew and knit as a kid. She tackled quilting as an adult and is adding upholstery to the mix. Sarah is excited to be teaching a class at Stitch House and is looking forward to seeing what your creative self can do.

Specifics: This class runs 1 Saturday, April 13th, in the afternoon from 1-5pm. The class cost of $30, not inclusive of materials, is due at time of registration. You should bring the following with you:

• Your favorite crew neck sweater (to copy),
• A sharpie or black marker
• 3-4 sweaters that you want to cut up
• Scissors, a stitch ripper, pins, a roller-cutter, mat, and ruler

846 Dorchester Avenue
Dorchester, Massachusetts 02125
(617) 265-8013
www.stitchhousedorchester.com

All Classes: If you are registered for a class at Stitch House you’ll receive a 10% discount on your yarn purchases on the same day you register and during the class session.

Maximum class size is 6. Any class may be cancelled due to low enrollment. Refunds will only be made in this circumstance. Any class cancellations will be made at least 1 week before the start of the class. If an individual class session needs to be cancelled, each participant will be notified immediately. In a single session cancellation, the class will be held the week after the last scheduled class.

booking a circus in boston

Hey everyone,

I am part of a 10 person circus/music performance group called Criss Cross
Circus. We are based out of Hampshire College in western Massachusetts and this
summer we are planning a 4 week May-June tour from the east coast out to
Seattle in our veggie bus. Our first stop is Boston.

I was wondering if anyone had any information regarding venues that would be interested in booking a small circus show, or bands that would be interested in sharing a show (we do a lot of work with bands in western Mass, so we have a lot of experience with being general crowd winder-uppers and visual entertainment). We would be pretty adaptable but the place would need a semi-legit stage (not just a foot and a half thing in the corner of a bar).

Our website is: circusfolkunite.googlepages.com/cr...cus

please contact me at jnf04@hampshire.edu if you have any information that would be at all useful.

thanks! --Juliana

4th Annual BOSTON BUNNY BARHOP!

Hey you! You are cordially invited to participate in the epic FOURTH Annual Boston Bunny Barhop!

Friday, March 21st. First drink of the night around 9 p.m.

WHERE: Cambridge, MA. Starting-line bar = Miracle of Science Bar & Grill, 321 Mass Ave.

Come join the rabble at any time (though we'd love to have you there for the whole ugly drunken affair, start to finish).

Seriously. Fashion them out of construction paper. Grab them from the Easter aisle of your friendly neighborhood drugstore. Maim a stuffed animal. Just wear the frickin' ears.

Questions & suggestions may be directed to your friendly rabbit coordinators:

Wickerman Burning - South Central PA Burn

Hi!
I wanted to let everyone know about a new burn, and I am part of the planning team for it, so my opinion is biased!

The burn is "Wicker Man," to be held Thursday through Monday, Memorial Day weekend; and we have a setup weekend, the weekend before. We are trying to lay the groundwork that will grow into a full-on burn, with an amazing site, roads for art cars, a $4,000 art grant budget and plans for a stupendous effigy.

We will be using Four Quarters as our site, which has the rep as one of the most edgy and progressive non-profit camps on the east coast. They have given us their full support for Wicker Man. Four Quarters has a piped water system, hot showers, flush toilets and of course port-a-potties. Buried power lines for their bio-fueled camp generator, a covered stage and three swimming holes. Lots of camping under tall trees and out in the sun too. And 2 miles of gravelled roads. Four Quarters is located 100 miles west of DC and Baltimore, just off I-68.

We want to develop a burn that is art focused and will support big art. And one that has a vision of the future of burns that is sustainable, ecologically responsible and leaves behind a small foot print. Thus "Wicker Man;" the old celebration of the Green Man and Green energy. We already have over 20 theme camps and art projects registered, and we are just beginning our announcements. We plan to have three "Theme Towns." "Sound Town," where we can run sound all night long, like the Gaian MInd psytrance festival held at Four Quarters. "Sin City" down along the river, a cure for what ever ails you. And "Center Circle," a place for nature and spirit; held inside the amazing stone circle at Four Quarters. (Yes, there is a circle of standing stones and they are BIG!)

And then there is the Man. Planned at 35 feet high our man stands on a round Temple to the Spirit of Fire, a big enough room that you can enter and place your own art and offerings to the burn. The roof of the temple is a deck upon which stands the Man, and people can stand too.. His belly is the Upper Temple, with room for just one person at a time. Each of his arms will hold a flaming fire pot, and we hope, will move as he burns. This is a huge project and we are looking to get as many people involved in his construction as possible. Ground breaking for the Man is Friday, May 9th, and then the next two weekends until he burns.

I could go on and on, but our web site is up, with the first design drawings for the Man, pictures of art grant projects and theme camps. We have a list serve / forum too. So visit the web site at wickermanburning.org for much more info.

Wicker Man Burning, In Fire We Trust."

This Saturday-- Cut Up Sweater Making Class

Come learn how to make your own sweater like the one I'm wearing in the picture. This Saturday March 8th 1-5. There are only 3 spots left, so register now!!!!

Description: Want to make a sweater but don’t feel comfortable making one from scratch?

Specifics: This class runs 1 Saturday, March 8th, in the afternoon from 1-5pm.

Waking Dream seeks giant puppet builders and performers

Waking Dream, the performance company that has brought giant puppets to Starwood for the last five years, is seeking artists interested in helping us build and perform new work at this year's Starwood, and at other regional gatherings this summer.

Experience not neccessary, however we are looking for people who have confidence making things and performing in front of people. Must be will to challenge ones self and be willing to perform in bizarre, sometime uncomfortable costumes.

Our studio and workshop is located in Greenwich, Connecticut, about 45 minutes from New York.

Big beautiful coop. Small but cozy room. You?

Malverna Brown.

It's the type of place that really needs its own name.

Join our beautiful house. Our community. Our house meals, our jams, our events, and classes. Get inspired and run off to do your own project or see if someone wants to collaborate. Everyone brings different skills and passions to the table.

The focus of the house is in the public spaces. We maximize play space.

People are usually pretty impressed when they walk up to the third floor music studio. Ready to jam, ready to record. It has a lot of interesting things that make sounds, and often times people in there who produce some good musica. Thursdays have turned into "jam nights" and the neighbors still seem to like us.

Who needs a living room anyway? Ours was quickly transformed into a dance studio. Every once in a while there's a class there. Other days there may be a massage, or one of the housemates just stretching. And on other nights the screen is pulled down to watch the new Netflix installment.

The second floor public space doubles as an arts & crafts room as well as an office. There may be an upholstery project underway or a human tinkering with wires to produce a robot. And don't forget the aquatron which produces the tunes. Two of us often work there during the day. A web developer and college art professor. The activist and massage therapist go elsewhere for their careers.

The backyard is a public space that changes over the course of the year. In the warmer months some of the housemates get into gardening, and during the colder months we've found solace in our new little hottub. A new acquisition thanks to the guy who's place you'd be taking.

The last, and arguably most important public space is the kitchen. It's big, and beautiful and pretty clean. Really. The kitchen is buzzing a couple nights of week in the preparation for the house meals. People here can cook too.

In fact, they have to.

Each person cooks one night a week. Meaning you will too. That's one of our rules.

Yes, we're artists, but there are rules - community works better when there's a little structure. Most of the housemates, who range in age from 27-40, have lived in cooperative living situations before, so they garnered the best of all those past experiences. Yes, there's a chore wheel. We pay for food collectively and have a great system that simplifies all the expenses. We have a house meeting whenever we need to talk something through... but things really run smoothly, so we probably only meet once every two months.

We want a fresh infusion of energy. What are you into? What's your favorite game? What's your favorite stretch? What's your favorite thing to cook? What do you practice?

So the bedrooms are the smallest rooms in the house and your bedroom is also the smallest of the bedrooms, but you'll pay less than the rest of us. The room also has its own porch, a long porch, and the view is nice. Downtown Boston. There's a lofted bed in there now that can be removed if you want.

What else...

washing, dryer, & dish washer. internet. big basement for storage space and a nice workarea. Forest Hills and the Arboretum are less than 2 miles. a nice landlord and neighbors. It's a family area, and a fairly diverse community. there's a moat around the perimeter.

Ok, there's no moat.

Write back and give us a taste of who you are and what you'd bring to this house. Looking forward to some interesting reading.

Peace

the Malverna Brown residents

From the humans of the Firefly Land Search Committee:

Hello Citizen of the World,

Firefly, the New England Regional Burn, is looking
for land... and we need your help!

We have been extremely lucky to have had a home in
Vermont the past four years, but issues with the land
and event growing pains are making it necessary for us
to explore other options.

The basic requirements for land for Firefly are:
-Within 4ish-hour drive from Boston.
-Enough land for 500+ people to camp and cavort on.
(Past sites have been ~100 acres. While large is good,
we don't necessarily need a bigger space and depending
on the the layout, a significantly smaller site could
also work.)
-Parking capacity for 200+ cars.
-Isolated enough that 24/hr music and noise will not
disturb neighbors.
-Permits fire.

If you have any leads, we'd love to hear about them.

Please send suggestions to the Firefly Land Search
Committee at fireflyland@xuth.net.

Feel free to re-post this message to other
appropriate distribution lists or tribes.

For more info on Firefly, please go to
http://www.fireflyartscollective.org .

Thanks!

OT: Pillow fight - Boston Common (12/15 @ 1pm)

*** BOSTON PILLOW FIGHT! SAT DECEMBER 15th 2007! BOSTON COMMONS @ 1pm! ***

Sign up for future mailings about free, fun, public events in
Boston like this at www.misteriosos.org ;)

It's been a long time coming. Poor Boston has been behind the
curve, but we're trying to fix that and are currently starting up
an organization named Banditos Misteriosos (www.misteriosos.org), with the focus
of bringing Boston/Cambridge alive with a slew of guerilla activities
and craft fairs. We really want to make this organization as
community-based as possible, so visit your new home (misteriosos.org) and
get involved!

We are proud to announce that we are getting the ball rolling with
an all out Pillow Fight on Saturday, December 15th at 1pm in the
Boston Commons!

Map: tinyurl.com/286eg7
Facebook: facebook.com/event.php
Upcoming: upcoming.yahoo.com/event/354682/

The exact details!:
Saturday, December 15th. 1pm
Directions: (In Boston Commons)
Take the either red or green line to "Park St." station. Then,
merely walk down ~200 feet until you reach a fountain on your right and
you are across from from the Cathedral Church of St. Paul on your left.

There are four simple guidelines!
1. Bring a pillow! A soft one if you can!
2. Only hit those who are holding pillows!
3. Arrive early and remain inconspicuous as you can until the time of battle (1pm)!
4. Spread the word. Bring your friends! Bring your children!

What-have-you! (The flyer, if you would like to print and pass around can be
viewed here --> www.misteriosos.org/space/Pi...Print.jpg )

! We would love to have more people involved !

Hope to see you there! Spread the word!

Boston 2007 Santacon?

I keep hearing Boston's Santacon is happening on 12/22, but I can't find any info anywhere. I've posted on a bunch of boards, but since I'm in Seattle, I'm out of touch with local news.

Anyone got a lead on Boston Santacon 2007? Or know who I should contact?
